Dave Matthews Band brings out Warren Haynes to play a gorgeously perfect “Cortez The Killer” at MSG. There are so many great versions of these guys doing this song together and it’s become sort of a staple in the jam band community.
Other than obviously being familiar with the Neil Young original, my first Warren / Mule exposure to this was on the Live… With A Little Help From Our Friends album. Even though it was a regularly appearing tune in Gov’t Mule’s live arsenal it took us, I think, fourteen shows to get our first version in person.
Warren is the fucking best there is. No one else triggers that, I don’t even know what to call it, feeling in me – but when it happens it’s amazing and I get lost in it and the crappy fucking world we live in disappears and everything is right for just a little while.
