“The record you didn’t know you needed is what I am listening to in the other room.”

1001 Albums Day 76 – Pet Sounds

/

The Beach Boys in the studio circa 1966

So the guy who does the site that generates the daily album did a thing yesterday where everyone got a Beach Boys or Brian Wilson album if one remained on their list. I got Pet Sounds which I just listened to yesterday while writing my post about Brian Wilson. But you know what, I kind of like this album so I decided to listen again.

I wrote a lot yesterday about this album but I can extrapolate a little here and just say that I would struggle to find music as beautiful as what Brian created here. It is so rich and luxurious and those aren’t really words I would use to describe anything else.

One of the things I noticed while listening again tonight is that I found myself anticipating certain moments in the songs that I particularly love and there are just so many of them here. Little nuggets of extra brilliance spread throughout that make it even more special.

Listening to Pet Sounds is like eating a comfort food, it is the grilled cheese sandwich of albums. Many albums are said to be classic and influential and there should be no dissenting discussion as to the worthiness of Pet Sounds on either count.

To learn more about the 1001 Albums Project, I first wrote about it here.
