1001 Albums Day 36 – Graceland

Paul Simon on stage with band during Graceland tour.

I haven’t listened to this album all the way through in a long time and it doesn’t feel like it has aged very well. I like “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” a lot still but overall I didn’t seem to enjoy this as much as I used to. It’s not a terrible album but it isn’t something I am likely to put on again any time soon, there is so much more of his work I would rather listen to instead.

To learn more about the 1001 Albums Project, I first wrote about it here.

  1. The album came out just a few months before I got married in 1986. I recall listening to it as a background to when my wife and I would cook together. Setting aside the whole apartheid thing, today he might be accused of cultural appropriation. . . Tonight, when my wife and I prepare dinner, I’ll play it to remind us of simpler times and to see if I agree with your test of time note. (Pretty sure I will as my musical tastes have changed)

    1. Yeah, I remember it fondly, and I put a song from it on a mix tape for my wife when we started dating. It is interesting how some things like this fade while other things have remained favorites for just as long.
