I have heard The White House called The People’s House in the past, but today I learned (from the official government National Park Service web site) that it is also a National Park.
The White House is a National Park
The White House is owned by the American people and stewarded by the National Park Service. It is more than the President’s residence; it is a site for protests and national discourse about what it means to be American. As one of the most iconic sites in the country, the White House and President’s Park seeks to tell the stories of all people who have lived, worked, and visited.
It is also a National Historic Landmark which means:
To be a National Historic Landmark (NHL) means a property has been designated by the Secretary of the Interior as being of exceptional national significance to American history and culture, such as buildings, sites, districts, structures, or objects. These landmarks are chosen for their exceptional value in illustrating the heritage of the United States and are automatically listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
In the case of The White House, it is owned by the United States, and by extension, the people.
I am not a lawyer and don’t know if the current self designated orange autocrat currently residing in my house has the legal right to desecrate it like he is currently doing, but as a part owner I know I wasn’t consulted, nor would I have approved any such modifications to build a ballroom.
I suggest that the next occupant just tear the gaudy Mar-A-Lago looking monstrosity down, and restore the Rose Garden while they are at it. Charge people $10 to spend 10 minutes in there with a sledgehammer, that should cover the costs.
As for the featured image – it’s pretty symbolic actually to see The White House looking like this. The White House symbolizes American democracy, the presidency, and the nation’s history and unity, so of course it is being dismantled right in front of our eyes.
Even though I imagine he will likely sell the naming rights to Elon Musk and then pocket the profits, here is a good suggestion for a name we can use for our own reference.
