Scott’s Brain

In today’s episode of Gee – Scott’s brain is weird, in yesterday’s post about music nostalgia I mentioned a series of radio promos that ran in the 70’s and 80’s promoting all sorts of events in the Chicagoland area that I remembered but couldn’t recall the specific details.

What I didn’t mention is that I spent about 2 hours yesterday searching YouTube and Google and having my AI research jingles and such with absolutely no success. I added a query to my post here, asked on Bluesky and had Gina ask on Facebook but got no answers.

What I didn’t count on is the fact that my brain is weird. I often use the analogy of my brain as a computer because so much of what I do I can equate to programs and queries and databases, and um, even kernel panics and crashes…

So I must have started, without realizing it, a low priority background task of a query to search the archived memories in my brain for more information about this stupid promo.

Today while sitting with Gina and eating lunch, all of a sudden I just blurted out “Starbeat Presents What’s Happening” because, apparently that is the notification that the search was successful. I don’t think I was thinking about it, it certainly wasn’t at the forefront of my thoughts, but there must have been a part of me going through the LTO tapes, or punch cards, or whatever ancient shit I keep 45 year old seemingly unimportant facts on until it found it.

A description of Starbeat Presents What's Happening! that says: In 1973, local band booking agent Mickey Cull was looking for a way to promote his acts on the top Chicago rock stations WLS and WCFL. He was introduced to Steve Cronen and his Starbeat Studios. Steve and Mickey created the concept for a listing of band entertainment around the Chicagoland area, dubbing it "Starbeat Presents What's Happening!" Soon "What's Happening" evolved into also promoting unique club events, many of which were hosted by Steve Cronen.

The successful concept went on to include FM radio stations and even late night television on Chicagoland airways for 26 years. After a great run, Steve now devotes his time and skill to Starbeat Studios which has become a full service adverting agency.

I wasn’t able to find an example of the radio ads that I remember, but here is one that ran on tv – the opening jingle part is the same as is the Steve Cronen / Starbeat Dictaphone mention at the end. I remember the radio ads being more music focused but that part may still be a bit fuzzy…

Good job Scott’s brain – good job…
