So I was going to just post this great UFO song “Love To Love” as a Random Song but when I listened to it I got all nostalgic and shit about my days as a young’n during the late 70s and early 80s and the Chicago area rock music landscape at the time. It was certainly in regular rotation at the time.
Back then, the radio airwaves were dominated by rock stations like WLUP (The Loop) and WMET, as well as good old WXRT.
I remember going to the record store and getting my monthly ‘XRT Featured Artist Card where they would list an artist or pair of artists that they would play a lot of that day. Sometimes the pairings were really strange or incongruent which was awesome.

WLUP was famous for it’s iconic Loop logo, especially when modeled by Lorelei

…as well as radio innovators and on-air personalities Steve Dahl and Gary Meier

WMET was known for just playing kick ass rock and roll until a format change in 1985.
While out at the record store, we’d also get a copy of the Illinois Entertainer which was free and had stories about musical acts and all the local music news.

The Illinois Entertainer also featured adverts for all of the local clubs like The Thirsty Whale and Pointe East!
I also recall a recurring commercial or promo that ran on the rock stations which was a promo of the concerts and such that were coming up or just announced. I can hear it in my head but for the life of me I can’t recall any of the details like what they called it. It had a name that they used in each promo or a sponsor or something and the Internet and my AI have failed me when trying to find it. If you have any idea what I am talking about – please leave me a comment or get in touch.
I reconnected some neural pathways that had been long diminished while putting this one together.
Anyway, here is that UFO song that started this whole thing.
AI generated the featured image for this post, I think it did a fine job…
