Random Song of the Day (RSOTD) – Day of the Eagle

Eagle in Flight

In honor of Jackie and Shadow, the eagles at Big Bear Valley who are currently minding their recently hatched eaglets. Gina and I have been watching the live stream on YouTube for the last couple of weeks and now on most days it’s up on our TV during the day. We were saddened today to learn that one of the eaglets didn’t survive the big snow storm, we are wishing for the best for the rest of the family.

When I turn on the live stream I see that there are usually about 60,000 people watching it and I am grateful that Gina found about it so that we can be a part of that group. It is amazing how engaged we are by all of this, and despite the recent loss, this is a great source of joy for us. The eagles are so majestic and beautiful and seeing them feed and protect the eaglets is so amazing.

This is the sort of thing that we need more of in our society, the opportunity to be awed by nature, or music, or art, or literature, or anything. It brings people together, it makes us curious to learn, it entertains, and it can be a distraction from the challenge and stress in our daily lives.

Unfortunately this is the sort of intangible thing that is most at risk of being cut and discontinued. Friends of Big Bear Valley is a non-profit organization but currently anything that receives government funding is potentially on the chopping block. Things like our national parks which provide so much to us and should be treasured are just one example.

So anyway, here is Robin Trower from the great Bridge of Sighs record. There were other things I considered, like “Fly Like An Eagle” but these guys mostly just sit in the nest and “Sit Like An Eagle” isn’t a thing. I am not a fan of the band Eagles so they were out, and unfortunately Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” popped in to my head as an option but, um. no.
