“The record you didn’t know you needed is what I am listening to in the other room.”

Great Vocalists – Paul Rodgers

/

I am often struck at just how good Paul Rodgers is. Was listening to a mix on my YouTube Music this morning and heard a few tracks featuring him. His work with Free is great and underappreciated since most people only seem to know of the one song – “All Right Now” from the incredible Fire and Water album. Give that whole thing a spin one day!

Of course most people know him from Bad Company and perhaps from the short lived collaboration project with Jimmy Page, The Firm. He did a few gigs with Queen as well post Freddie Mercury but before Adam Lambert.

I spent most of the morning trying to decide which song I wanted to share with you. I had it narrowed down to two but then I thought, fuck it, it’s my blog and I can do what I want and I want to post both of them. So here goes:

The first is Mr. Big from the afforementioned Fire and Water album. My favorite band Gov’t Mule does a cover of this on their first album and it’s easy to hear the Free influence in their music. The bass is front and center just like Woody played.

The second choice is “Live in Peace” which was originally on Paul’s solo album Cut Loose. The Firm did a version for their second album Mean Business. This is a live version that I like a lot.

Paul released another solo album Midnight Rose in 2023 which fits right in with the rest of his work. It’s worth a listen as well.

What do you think? Which songs do you think feature Paul’s talent particularly well?
