“The record you didn’t know you needed is what I am listening to in the other room.”

You Can Leave Your Hat On – Random Song of the Day (RSOTD)

/

Close up of Randy Newman circa 1972

When Gina does her grocery shopping, upon her return she makes a point of sharing with me the highlights of the music she heard in the store. It could be blasts from the past or old favorites of ours, anything that catches her ear. The best ones though are the odd ones, the ones you don’t expect to get played in a grocery store.

I always ask her if they played The Clash’s “Lost in the Supermarket” but as of yet, they have not.

This week’s oddity that they did play was “You Can Leave Your Hat On” and while I would have been surprised to hear it was the Joe Cocker cover, I was downright gobsmacked to hear they played the Randy Newman original.

From his 1972 release Sail Away. I always thought this was a great song but man it has such a creepy vibe to it. Hard to believe this and the delightfully cheery “You’ve Got A Friend in Me” came from the same person.
