“The record you didn’t know you needed is what I am listening to in the other room.”

Week of October 26 – November 1, 2026

As usual, here are my quick notes and thoughts about the full albums I listened to the previous week. It feels like an odd assortment but I just sort of follow a path of curiosity, or go with a feeling of just wanting to hear something in particular when the mood strikes.

I never know what that is going to be or where it’s going to take me, and that really is the fun of it.

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town Album Cover
Far Out

My favorite Springsteen album. “Racing in the Street” alone makes this one an instant classic but toss in “Badlands”, “Candy’s Room”, “Streets of Fire”, and..

Shit, the whole thing is a masterpiece!

The Kinks - Preservation Act 1 Album Cover
Far Out

Another week, more mother fucking Kinks!

The Rolling Stones - Tattoo You Album Cover
Copacetic

I usually skip over the dumpster fire that is “Start Me Up” and often all of side 1 when I pull this one out as the second side is where the good stuff is! I listened to the whole thing this time for completeness. I don’t think I’ll do that again any time soon.

Thin Lizzy - Chinatown Album Cover
Copacetic

It’s a pretty decent Thin Lizzy album with all the Thin Lizzy things you expect from a Thin Lizzy album. Honestly though, any Thin Lizzy album without “Cowboy Song” will always be lacking.

Otis Redding - In Person at the Whiskey A Go Go Album Cover
Far Out

Otis was a singular talent with a voice like no other. He will always be one of the most engaging, energetic, and enjoyable live performers I have ever heard. If the first track “I Can’t Turn You Loose” doesn’t get your body moving and your soul lifted, your life is lacking the ability to experience unbridled joy.

Captain Beyond - Sufficiently Breathless Album Cover
Far Out

I always really enjoy this one when I spin it. Never sure how to describe it, or them, I guess you just need to experience them for yourself. The title track is a perfect song.

The Barr Brothers - Sleeping Operator Album Cover
Far Out

From the first time I saw The Barr Brothers on Letterman in January 2012 I have been hooked. I played the shit out of their eponymous debut and when this one came out in 2014 it caught right up to the first. Both rank in my top 20 most listened to albums in my last.fm library. They are so fucking good.

Noah and the Whale - Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down Album Cover
Far Out

This is such a lovely sounding album. I usually reach for Last Night on Earth but I am really trying to extend my reach for bands where I seem stuck on one release and it’s paying off when I get to experience stuff like this again.

The Replacements - All Shook Down Album Cover
Copacetic

It’s not my favorite Replacements album, but it is a Replacements album which makes it worth a listen in my book.

(Note, I do not really have a book)
