Random Song of the Day (RSOTD) – Joe’s Garage

Frank Zappa on stage holding Gibson SG guitar

Frank Zappa with the title track from his 3 act masterpiece Joe’s Garage. Featuring the narration of The Central Scrutinizer, it’s quite a story that plays out as we follow Joe through his many adventures. This album features some of the finest guitar work that Frank recorded, particularly the instrumental “Watermelon in Easter Hay” and is probably one of his most accessible releases. It’s always been one of my favorites.

  1. I remember the first time I heard Acts 1 & 2. It was a Saturday afternoon while at college and AJ came to our room and said “ You got to hear this”. Laying on my bed, that lazy afternoon, I decided Joe’s Garage was one of my favorite albums of all time. 43 years later, I feel the same. “and here comes the ice pick in the forehead”. The only problem is that the title track is the only one you can share in polite company 😉

    1. Such a great story – thanks for sharing it. Amazing how music can bring back such memories.

My high school radio station had a bunch of Zappa records in the collection but the majority of them had deep gouges in the songs that were not radio friendly. Trying to find something that hadn’t been scraped up was a challenge.
