1001 Albums Day 44 – The Köln Concert

After two albums that I struggled to get through, I was so relieved to see this Keith Jarret come up as my assignment for the day. This album is an absolute treasure that I have listened to an astounding number of times. I really don’t listen to a lot of jazz or solo piano but this album seems to hit all the right notes and it just creates a perfect place to escape to.

I read something about this album a while ago and it mentioned that some people complain about his spontaneous utterances during the performance but to me they are magnificent. It is those moments when the music he is creating affects him deeply, an unconscious realization that “this is fucking amazing what I am doing here” and we all get lost in it with him.

I couldn’t love this album more than I do. Can I have a sixth star for this one?

I am sharing Part I because I love how he starts playing and we can follow along as he develops the piece in real time.
