It’s hard to imagine a more drastic shift in career than that of John Mayer. Gina and I saw him pretty early on when Robert Randolph opened for him. The largely acoustic show was enjoyable but in hindsight it did little to display the guitar prowess he would ultimately display.
I remember seeing him on The Jammies soon after and was surprised to see him holding his own on stage with Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks – it was obvious he had skills.
Later albums expanded his sound as he featured more blues and such – I really liked the John Mayer Trio and overall I would consider myself a fan.
I remember being surprised when he joined Dead and Company but man did he prove himself worthy. It’s hard to believe that the same acoustic playing heartthrob we saw in 2001 became the carrier of the jam band torch, a role he has played so well.
I always liked this one
