Lyrics – Two of Us

Beatles during Let it Be sessions

In the premiere post of this series, which I introduced here, I figured I would start with what just might be the best single line lyric in all of recorded music.

“You and I have memories, longer than the road which stretches out ahead”

I have always loved this line in “Two of Us” from Let It Be, written by Paul in 1969 when he was only 27. It’s such a wonderfully wise and evocative lyric, and one which has grown in meaning – contextually in relation to his relationship with Linda as well as John and The Beatles who were on the verge of breakup, and also in terms of my own thoughts on mortality and loss which have deepened over the years.

The ability to say so much in just a few words is such a special skill for a lyricist and Paul shows his mastery here.

If I were a betting man, I’d put money down that Sir Paul will make more than a few future appearances here.
